The Nigerian Army has dismissed a viral video alleging that the establishment of its School of Islamic Affairs is part of a plot to Islamize Nigeria and destroy the country’s secular foundation.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, claimed the move mirrors actions in countries like Turkey and Libya, which allegedly led to prolonged instability. It urged the Army to focus on combating insecurity and defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity rather than veering into religious matters.
In a strongly worded statement, the Army described the claims as false, misleading, and baseless, stressing that the institution remains a secular and professional force that respects all religious beliefs.
“The Nigerian Army operates as a secular organisation that guarantees freedom of religion for all personnel, regardless of rank or faith,” the statement read.
“The viral narrative attempting to label the Army as promoting religious bigotry is not only wrong but fails to reflect the values we uphold.”
To clarify, the Army highlighted that it runs multiple religious institutions to serve its diverse personnel, including:
- The Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs, Ikeja, Lagos
- The Nigerian Army Protestant Training School, Yaba, Lagos
- The Nigerian Army Chaplain Catholic Training School, Ojo, Lagos
These institutions, the Army noted, often engage in interfaith collaboration to promote unity and cohesion within the military.
The statement reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to secularism, inclusivity, and professionalism, ensuring that all personnel can practice their faith freely while serving the nation.
