Nigerian Army Set to Commemorate Momentous 160th Anniversary

In commemoration of its 160th anniversary, the Nigerian Army has announced plans to celebrate its rich history and showcase its remarkable achievements in operations, research, and development since its establishment in 1863.

According to the Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, the origins of the Nigerian Army can be traced back to 1863 when Lt Glover of the Royal Navy carefully selected 18 individuals from the northern region of the country and formed a local force known as the ‘Glover Constabulary.’

By 1865, this constabulary had transformed into a regular force, assuming both police and military responsibilities for the colonial government.

Addressing the press in Abuja on Tuesday, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, highlighted the extensive growth and development the Nigerian Army has undergone during its 160 years of existence. Represented by Maj. Gen. Emeka Onumajuru, the Chief of Special Services and Programmes (Army), Lagbaja emphasized that the Nigerian Army, as a highly esteemed national institution entrusted with the constitutional duty of safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, has a proud history of service that dates back to 1863.

Furthermore, Lagbaja revealed that the upcoming 2023 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) event, scheduled to be held in Ibadan on July 6, would serve as a commemoration of the day the Nigerian Civil War erupted. This day also marks the firing of the very first shot of the war at Garkem, which is now part of Cross River State. He explained that this chosen date serves as a reminder of the past and the imperative of resolving conflicts through peaceful means rather than resorting to armed confrontation.

Lagbaja expressed, “The event provides the Nigerian Army with an opportunity to reflect on its achievements, evaluate its performance, engage with the public, and set objectives for continuous professional growth. By doing so, we enhance our ability to fulfill our constitutional duties effectively and remain competitive on the global stage alongside other esteemed armed forces.”

He further stated, “This year’s celebration aims to honor the Nigerian Army’s accomplishments. It will also spotlight the Army’s operational endeavors, transformative advancements in innovation, research and development, civil-military relations, and technological progress. By doing so, we seek to portray the Nigerian Army as a unifying and developmental force, while also showcasing its capabilities.”
