The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly issued a strike notice to the Federal Government, scheduled for November 8. This move comes in the wake of the recent attacks, abduction, and physical assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and other labor leaders.
During a press briefing on Friday, leaders from the NLC and TUC presented a list of six demands to the Federal Government. Among these demands is the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State and the Area Commander, as well as other officials implicated in the alleged complicity in the brutalization and humiliation of Comrade Ajaero and fellow workers.
The incident in question involved suspected state agents and security personnel who descended upon Ajaero and other labor leaders. They not only vandalized their vehicles but also inflicted injuries, and confiscated mobile phones, money, ATM cards, and other personal belongings from the labor leaders who had gathered at the NLC State secretariat to commence a planned protest regarding unresolved labor issues.
The protest at the NLC State secretariat in Owerri was primarily focused on issues such as unpaid salaries and allowances, pension and gratuity arrears, and the failure to adhere to the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack on and battering of Joe Ajaero has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation across the country. Leaders from the NLC and TUC are scheduled to convene on Tuesday next week to determine an appropriate course of action in response to this assault.
