The New Nigeria Peoples Party faction, led by Major Agbo, has announced the suspension of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, for a duration of six months due to his failure to appear before a disciplinary committee to address alleged violations of the party’s constitution. Ogini Olaposi, the National Secretary of the faction, disclosed this decision during a press conference held at the party secretariat in Abuja.
Olaposi clarified that the Board of Trustees made the decision to suspend the governor in the party’s best interest. He expressed concern over Yusuf’s participation in an “illegal” national convention organized by the Kwankwasiya group led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso in Abuja on April 6, despite being elected on the NNPP’s platform.
During the conference, Olaposi stated, “The leadership of the NNPP, in a bid to strengthen our internal disciplinary and democratic measures, particularly regarding party supremacy, has no choice but to take decisive action in accordance with the NNPP Constitution 2022 as amended.” As a result, Governor Abba Yusuf’s suspension for six months, with immediate effect, was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees and the National Working Committee of the party.
In response to the suspension, Dipo Olayoku, the National Secretary of the Kwankwasiyya faction of NNPP, dismissed the decision as baseless, describing the suspending faction as individuals who had been expelled from the party. Olayoku asserted that the suspending faction lacked the authority to take such action since they were not recognized members of the NNPP. He emphasized that the suspension was invalid and accused the faction of attempting to attract attention without any legal standing within the party.
