2027 Election: NNPP Chieftain Says Tinubu Offering Kwankwaso VP Slot Isn’t Insulting
A prominent figure within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has stated that there’s nothing inherently wrong with President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) potentially offering Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, the Vice Presidential slot in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Johnson made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ program on Monday, asserting that such an offer should not be considered insulting.
“It’s not insulting to offer him (the vice president slot); whether he accepts or not is a different thing,” Johnson clarified.
He further revealed that individuals within the APC have already contacted him regarding the possibility of an alliance between President Tinubu and Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano State and influential political force in Northern Nigeria.
“I’ve been with Senator Kwankwaso since 2013, 2014 and it’s always about the beliefs of the moment and whether those you are going to get involved with would allow you or make sure that such things happen,” Johnson explained.
He acknowledged the existing rumors and the potential for such a pairing, emphasizing the NNPP’s openness to dialogue following the 2023 elections. “Yes, there are rumours at the moment but it is a possibility because after the 2023 elections, we said we were open to discussions with anyone who wants to move forward.”
Johnson also highlighted the collaborative nature of the NNPP’s decision-making process. “People from the APC have called me to say: ‘Oh, if he is offered, please encourage him to accept’ but when it comes to the party, it is a team game.”
This statement suggests that while individual members may have their preferences, the ultimate decision regarding a potential alliance with the APC will be made collectively by the NNPP. The potential pairing of Tinubu and Kwankwaso presents an interesting dynamic for the 2027 elections and could significantly reshape the political landscape of Nigeria.
