In response to the alarming rise in self-kidnapping incidents, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against this criminal act, emphasizing its punishable status under the law. The public is cautioned against engaging in such activities due to the legal consequences associated with self-kidnapping. Recent cases in Lagos, Plateau, and Abuja have led to the arrest of suspects, highlighting the severity of this deceptive trend.
In Lagos, a couple, Doubara David Yabrifa (53) and Regina Yabrifa (48), was apprehended for an alleged self-kidnapping scheme with the aim of obtaining a N5 million ransom. The duo, a technician and a body massager/bone setter, respectively, were reported by a family member after orchestrating the kidnapping. Confessing to the plan, the couple revealed their motive was to raise N3 million to purchase property in Badagry, Lagos. The husband justified their actions based on financial difficulties and a lack of support from relatives. Both have been arrested and subsequently charged to court.
Similarly, Albarka Sukuya of Jenta Apata, Jos, was caught staging his kidnapping on multiple occasions in Plateau State, receiving ransoms from unsuspecting community members. In Abuja, on January 20, 2024, Nnamdi Agu attempted to fake his own kidnapping to defraud a family member. The Police swiftly intervened, foiling the staged kidnapping and arresting the suspect. These cases demonstrate an alarming trend where individuals exploit the prevalence of kidnapping incidents to engage in deceptive self-kidnapping schemes for financial gain.
The Nigeria Police Force urges the public to remain vigilant and warns those with intentions of partaking in such criminal acts to desist, as the police will spare no effort in ensuring that suspects face the full force of the law. Additionally, the Force appeals to the media, social media influencers, and bloggers to verify information before dissemination to avoid creating panic and jeopardizing security arrangements. The Police emphasize the importance of responsible reporting to maintain public trust and safety.
