The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of three senior police officers due to cases of “serious misconduct.” Additionally, the commission has sanctioned five other officers by approving their demotion for failing in their official duties. The decisions were among the key outcomes of the commission’s 21st plenary, which concluded on July 20, 2023.

The dismissed officers included two Deputy Superintendents of Police and one Assistant Superintendent of Police, while one Chief Superintendent of Police, one Superintendent, one Deputy Superintendent, and two Assistant Superintendents of Police faced demotion for their misconduct.

In further disciplinary actions, 14 officers received severe reprimands, six were punished, and seven were issued warning letters. The commission also reinstated six dismissed officers who secured favorable court judgments or had their cases reviewed.

Furthermore, on July 18, the commission approved the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Mathew Akinyosola (who retired on July 1) and Slyverster Abiodun Alabi (whose tenure started on the same day), with the latter representing the South West in the Police Management Team. Additionally, the commission promoted the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Oladunmoye Adejobi, to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.

In an effort to recognize and reward excellence, the commission also approved the promotion of 14,052 Inspectors of Police who attended the last Departmental Selection Board promotion interview to the next rank of Assistant Superintendents of Police (Unconfirmed). Some of the newly promoted ASPs include Fransica Njoku from Ebonyi State Command, Benjamin Justina from Rivers State Command, Nnamdi Nwoba from Abia State Command, Joseph Arinze from Zonal CID, Zone 9 Headquarters Umuahia, Mohammed Lawal, and Adamu Hassan.

Additionally, the commission confirmed the status of 9,016 Assistant Superintendents of Police, with officers like ASP Edo Ameh and ASP Abubakar Musa from FCT Command among those whose confirmation was approved.

The Commission Chairman emphasized that the PSC would continue to hold police officers accountable for their conduct, and disciplinary matters would receive urgent attention to avoid undue stagnation among the officers.
