President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Calls for Repeal and Enactment of Students Loan Legislation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the House of Representatives to repeal the Students Loans Act 2023 and replace it with the newly proposed Students Loan Bill 2024. Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, disclosed during Thursday’s plenary session that he had received the letter from the president, transmitting the proposed legislation.

In his letter, President Tinubu clarified that the repeal of the existing Students Loans Act and the subsequent enactment of a new bill were necessary steps to address certain challenges encountered with the previous legislation. The president emphasized that the aim of this legislative revision was to improve the implementation of the students loan scheme under his administration.

Upon review of the proposal, lawmakers showed overwhelming support for the new bill, unanimously acknowledging its potential to assist indigent students once operational. Consequently, the House of Representatives moved swiftly to consider and pass the Student Loan Access to Higher Education Bill for its second reading.

In a parallel development, the House also deliberated on a separate bill aiming to establish a federal college of education (technical) in Otan-Ayebaju, Osun state. This bill, too, garnered support and was passed for its second reading, indicating the legislative body’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities across the country.
