This marks the second gathering of the council, following its inaugural meeting held on Monday, August 28, 2023. Before the commencement of the session in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu administered the oath of office to three newly appointed ministers who had been approved by the Nigerian Senate. This development expands the federal cabinet to an unprecedented total of 48 members.
The newly sworn-in ministers are Balarabe Lawal from Kaduna State, Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State, and Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State. Each of them has been assigned specific ministries to oversee.
On September 17, 2023, President Tinubu nominated Jamila Bio and Ayodele Olawande for the positions of Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth, respectively. Balarabe Lawal has been entrusted with the role of Minister of Environment.
The reason behind the delay in convening this cabinet meeting remains undisclosed, with both the President and Vice President having undertaken official foreign trips following the inaugural gathering. The FEC’s primary role is to shape policies, oversee government projects, and provide support to the President in carrying out his executive duties.
Additionally, a moment of silence was observed to pay tribute to Mr. Ajose-Adeogun, the first Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during Murtala Muhammed’s regime, who passed away at the age of 96.
The specific agenda for this second FEC meeting has not been confirmed, but it is anticipated to address important federal-level initiatives aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges within the country.
