President Bola Tinubu engaged in a critical meeting with key stakeholders concerning ECOWAS’ involvement in addressing the crisis in the Republic of Niger.

The delegation, led by Nigerian former Head of State, General Abubabkar Abdulsalami (rtd), visited the Presidential villa to provide President Tinubu with a comprehensive update on the current demands put forth by the junta that emerged from the Niger Coup.

President Tinubu holds the distinguished position of being the Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

It is noteworthy to recall that the leader of the coup in Niger had proposed a three-year transition of power, subsequent to discussions with a delegation of West African leaders. The leader also cautioned against any aggression aimed at the nation, stating that such actions would face substantial resistance.

General Abdourahmane Tchiani, addressing the nation on Saturday through national television, refrained from divulging explicit details about the potential transition, emphasizing that the principles guiding the transition would be determined within a 30-day period during a dialogue convened by the ruling military council.

After the meeting, General Abdulsalami (rtd) conversed with reporters at the State House, elucidating that the meeting with President Tinubu represents a crucial step within the broader efforts to establish a resolution to the prevailing political crisis, subsequent to the military’s overthrow of the democratically elected President.

In attendance were key figures such as Dr. Omar Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser to the President. This collaborative discourse signifies a collective commitment to resolving the complex situation facing the Republic of Niger.
