Reps Announces 134 Standing Committee Chairmen and Deputies for 10th National Assembly

On Thursday, the House of Representatives revealed its plans for the 10th National Assembly, unveiling a total of 134 Standing Committees responsible for oversight functions and various legislative activities. The Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, made the announcement, also disclosing the appointed Chairmen and their deputies for each committee.

Among the notable appointments were Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker from Abia, who will head the Constitution Review Committee; Hon. Abubakar Bichi from Kano, who will oversee Appropriations; Hon. Muhammed Elrufai from Kaduna, responsible for Banking Regulations; and Hon. Bamidele Salam from Osun, who will lead the Public Account Committee. Other notable appointments included Hon. Ikenga Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere from Imo, in charge of Petroleum Resources (Downstream); Hon. Henry Okojie from Edo, responsible for Petroleum Midstream; Hon. Victor Ogene from Anambra, heading the Renewable Energy Committee; and Hon. Amos Dunia overseeing House services.

Hon. Ibori Swenu from Delta was appointed to lead the NDDC Committee; Hon. Babajimi Benson from Lagos will head the Defence Committee; Hon. Hassan Fulata from Jigawa will oversee University Education; and Hon. James Falake from Lagos will take charge of the Finance Committee. Additionally, Akin Alabi from Oyo will be in charge of the Media Committee, and Ginger Onwusibe from Abia will head the Financial Crimes Committee.

Other notable appointments include Muktar Aliyu Betara from Borno for the FCT Committee; Hon. Boma Goodhead from Rivers overseeing the Local Content Committee; Hon. Wole Oke from Osun heading the Judiciary Committee; Hon. Ahmed Wase from Plateau in charge of the Federal Character Committee; and Hon. Abdulmumuni Jibrin from Kano leading the Foreign Affairs Committee. Hon. Akin Alabi from Oyo will also be heading the Works Committee; Hon. Leke Abejide from Kogi overseeing the Customs and Excise Committee; Hon. Yusuf Gagdi from Plateau leading the Navy Committee; Hon. Ado dogwa from Kano in charge of the Petroleum Up-Stream Committee; and Hon. Peter Akpatason from Edo heading the Aviation Committee.

Notably, in his remarks, Speaker Abbas emphasized that there were no grade ‘A’ or privileged committees, suggesting that all committees were to be treated equally in terms of importance and influence.
