Reps Panel Vows to Address Plateau Killings, Set to Convene Security Summit

A House of Representatives committee has committed to taking concrete steps to end the ongoing killings in Plateau State.

Hammed Waheed, who chairs the ad hoc committee responsible for organizing a special security summit on the Plateau crisis, made this pledge during the panel’s session on Tuesday.

Armed attackers have recently launched fresh assaults across the north-central state. In response, the House of Representatives formed the committee on May 8 to bring together diverse stakeholders for a security summit aimed at finding long-term solutions.

Just last Friday, violence escalated when a mob torched a bus carrying wedding guests from Zaria, Kaduna, to Quan Pan LGA in Plateau, killing 12 people.

Waheed affirmed the committee’s resolve to pave the way for lasting peace, justice, security, and reconciliation in Plateau.

“For too long, Plateau State has endured persistent security challenges. We’ve all witnessed the repeated cycles of violence that have left communities grieving, displaced thousands, destroyed livelihoods, and fractured trust among ethnic and religious groups,” he said.

He stressed that the violence doesn’t just affect Plateau—it spills over into neighboring states and threatens national stability.

The committee, he explained, will organize a special summit that brings together security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organizations, youth and women groups, researchers, and political figures for meaningful, solution-focused dialogue.

“This summit won’t be a routine gathering. It’s a platform for truth-telling, healing, dialogue, and delivering strong recommendations,” Waheed said.

He added that the panel would work directly with impacted communities, investigate root causes and conflict triggers, design an inclusive framework for the summit, and compile a detailed report with practical recommendations.

“The people are watching us. This task goes beyond politics—it’s about protecting lives and rebuilding communities,” he said, urging committee members to approach their work with seriousness and dedication.
