Seek True Peace to Avoid Impeachment, Rivers APC Warns Suspended Governor Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to embark on genuine reconciliation efforts with the state’s lawmakers to avert impeachment. The party emphasized that without sincere peace-building measures, the governor’s position remains precarious.

At a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee, expressed concern that Governor Fubara has yet to take meaningful steps towards mending fences with the duly elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. According to Okocha, this lack of initiative threatens to deepen the political crisis engulfing the state.

The political turmoil in Rivers State escalated on March 18 when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency. This decisive move was prompted by the ongoing deadlock between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Fubara, which had paralyzed governance in the state. In response, President Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara and the State House of Assembly, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator for a six-month tenure.

Amid circulating rumors that President Tinubu might reinstate Governor Fubara during the upcoming June 12 anniversary, Okocha clarified that no reconciliation efforts are currently underway. “I can confirm that there is no reconciliation effort currently underway in Rivers,” he said. “The suspended Governor, Fubara, has not made any move to reconcile with the lawmakers.”

Okocha stressed that the Supreme Court judgment remains binding and that only genuine reconciliation efforts can save Fubara from impeachment. The APC’s stance underscores the critical importance of political harmony and the rule of law in restoring stability to Rivers State.

As the June 12 anniversary approaches, all eyes will be on the federal government’s next moves. However, the APC’s message is clear: peace and reconciliation are non-negotiable prerequisites for Governor Fubara’s political survival.
