The Senate has mandated the Committee on Nigeria Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to investigate the N6.5 billion shoreline protection contract awarded by the NDDC in 2006. The mandate was given following a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Folorunsho, who expressed concern that the sea incursion was threatening the crude oil production in the community.
Senator Folorunsho noted that Ayetoro community used to be one of the most prosperous riverine settlements in Nigeria, but the sea incursion has caused widespread damage to the community’s infrastructure, including roads, homes, and businesses. He also warned that if the situation was not arrested, the community would be forced to relocate.
The Senate directed the Committee on NDDC to work with the relevant ministries to develop a plan to mitigate the effects of the sea incursion and to ensure that the N6.5 billion shoreline protection contract is completed as soon as possible.
