This motion was moved by Sen. Asuquo Ekpeyong rep. Cross River South on the account that even within the Federal Capital Territory, hospitals continue to demand for police report before victims are attended to.

He recalled an alleged act of Maitama District Hospital, Abuja on their refusal to accept and treat Ms. Greatness Olorunfemi, a community developer and member of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network after being pushed out of a fast moving vehicle on Tuesday 26th September 2023 by notorious ‘one-chance’ operators

It is worrisome that the problem with the treatment of gunshot victims is not because of the absence of law as the compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshot Acts,2017 clearly provides for the mandatory treatment of such victims alongside punishment for contravention of the provisions of the. Act ,but that the problem is centered at Lund enforcement and compliance.

In view of this, Sen. Ningi also stated that the Maitama General hospital should be charged with responsibility of “manslaughter” for the death of Ms Greatness.

The Senate resolved that the Inspector of Police and the Minister of Health should investigate the circumstances and abandonment of Ms Greatness Olorunfemi by Staff of Maitama District Hospital and report back to the Senate in 2 weeks time.

A One minute silence was observed for the repose of the soul of Ms. Greatness Olorunfemi and several other Nigerians who lost their lives in similar circumstances nationwide.
