Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Fights Recall Petition, Alleges Signature Forgery
Kogi Central: Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Petitions Police Over Alleged Forgery in Recall Petition
Abuja/Lokoja – The Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Barrister Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, alleging widespread forgery in a petition purportedly initiated to recall her from the Senate.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition, submitted to the police authorities, claims that signatures and details on the recall document being circulated are largely fabricated, designed to deceive the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public into believing there is a genuine constituent-led effort to remove her.
According to sources familiar with the petition, the Senator is specifically requesting a thorough criminal investigation into the origins of the recall petition, the identities of those behind the alleged forgery, and their motive. She is asking the police to identify and prosecute individuals involved in the falsification of signatures and voter information.
The recall process for a legislator in Nigeria is a constitutional provision, initiated by constituents through a petition containing verified signatures of a specified percentage of registered voters in the constituency. The process is overseen by INEC.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly asserts in her petition that the document is politically motivated and does not reflect the true will of the people of Kogi Central, who she claims overwhelmingly elected her. She argues that the alleged forgery is an attempt to subvert the democratic process and disenfranchise her constituents.
At the time of filing this report, neither the office of the IGP, the Kogi State Police Command, nor INEC had issued a public statement regarding the petition or the alleged forgery.
The development adds a new dimension to the political landscape in Kogi Central, placing the police at the centre of verifying the authenticity of the recall process initiated against the Senator.
