In a bid to elevate the standards of its workforce, the Sokoto State Police Command has officially launched an in-house refresher training programme aimed at enhancing professionalism, discipline, and service delivery among its officers.

The initiative, which kicked off on Monday at the state police headquarters, is designed to equip personnel with updated skills and knowledge to better serve the community.

The training programme, which will run for two weeks, targets over 200 officers ranging from constables to senior inspectors.

According to a statement from the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Muhammad Bello, the curriculum includes modules on modern policing techniques, human rights awareness, community engagement, conflict resolution, and ethical conduct.

“This refresher course is not just about refreshing skills; it’s about rebuilding trust between the police and the public,” DSP Bello said.

“We recognize that in today’s dynamic environment, our officers need to be at the forefront of best practices to effectively combat crime and maintain law and order.”

The launch comes amid growing calls for police reform in Nigeria, following recent incidents of misconduct and public outcry over service inefficiencies.

Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ibrahim, emphasized that the programme is a proactive step to address these challenges. “Professionalism and discipline are the bedrock of effective policing.

By investing in our officers through this training, we are committing to higher standards of service delivery and ensuring that every interaction with the public is handled with integrity and respect,” CP Ibrahim stated during the opening ceremony.

Participants will undergo practical simulations, workshops, and assessments, with experts from the Nigerian Police Force’s training academy and external consultants contributing to the sessions.

The Command has also allocated resources for follow-up evaluations to measure the programme’s impact on officers’ performance in the field.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort by the Nigeria Police Force to modernize its operations, as outlined in the recent Police Act reforms.

Local stakeholders, including community leaders and civil society groups, have welcomed the move, viewing it as a positive step toward improving public safety in Sokoto State.

“We hope this training will translate into tangible improvements on the ground, making our communities safer and more secure,” said Alhaji Usman Kaita, a prominent community leader.

As the programme progresses, the Sokoto State Police Command plans to extend similar training opportunities to other ranks and possibly collaborate with neighboring states.

This development underscores the Command’s dedication to fostering a more accountable and efficient police force, ultimately benefiting the residents of Sokoto State.
