Nigeria’s Super Falcons trounced a local side, Lions FC of Gold Coast, Brisbane, 8-1 in a friendly match on Saturday. The victory was a morale-boosting performance for the African champions, who are preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons will face Canada in their opening match of the tournament on July 21. They will also play Chile and Thailand in Group B.

High Commissioner to Australia and the Pacific Region, Amb. Anderson N. Madubike, who was present at the friendly match, said he was impressed with the Super Falcons’ performance.

“From what I have seen here today, I am excited,” Madubike said. “I am happy. As I watched them play, I can tell you that these ladies are prepared to do Nigeria and Africa proud. They are, indeed, ready for this championship.”

The Super Falcons are making their ninth appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They have reached the quarterfinals twice, in 1999 and 2011.

With a strong squad and a winning mentality, the Super Falcons are hoping to make history at this year’s tournament.
