The Executive Governor of Taraba State, engaged in a significant meeting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters. His purpose was to confer with Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), regarding the pressing security challenges faced by Taraba State and the imperative for strengthened collaboration.

Governor Kefas began the discussion by recognizing the pivotal role played by the Nigerian Air Force in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts, particularly in the volatile northeast region. He emphasized that NAF’s air power capabilities represent a potent solution for curtailing the activities of terrorists and criminals in the northeast, thus underscoring the necessity for an augmented cooperation to counteract these criminal elements, particularly in Taraba State.

In more specific terms, Governor Kefas requested NAF’s assistance in patrolling the porous border that Taraba State shares with Cameroon, which has served as a transit route for criminals. He also sought NAF’s support in quelling the activities of terrorists and bandits within the state, who have been causing distress for the peace-loving people of Taraba. Additionally, the Governor shared his plans to reopen and upgrade the Suntai Airport and his efforts to combat illegal mining activities within the state.

Air Marshal Abubakar commended Governor Kefas for his commendable developmental initiatives, particularly his agricultural transformation programs and educational and skills development projects, which promise to create employment opportunities for the state’s youth and reduce crime. The CAS also expressed enthusiasm for the Governor’s intention to reopen and upgrade the Suntai Airport in Jalingo, recognizing its potential to revive domestic flights, attract investors, and enhance NAF’s operations in Taraba and beyond. Furthermore, he lauded the Governor for signing an Executive Order to prohibit illegal mining activities in the state, highlighting the link between such activities and terrorism and banditry.

Regarding the security risks posed by Taraba’s extensive border with Cameroon, the CAS assured the Governor that NAF was fully aware of the substantial, porous border spanning approximately 107 kilometers. Air Marshal Abubakar pledged NAF’s collaboration with the state government in patrolling this extensive border, instilling confidence in the people of Taraba. He stated, “As one of our own, rest assured of NAF’s unwavering cooperation and support until you succeed in delivering the dividends of democracy to your people.”

Accompanying Governor Kefas were several members of the Taraba State Executive Council, while various NAF Branch Heads and Directors were also present to welcome the Governor.
