Tinubu Anticipates More Defections to APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday expressed confidence that more politicians would defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit held at the State House Conference Centre, Tinubu celebrated his administration’s achievements and reaffirmed his belief that defection remains a natural aspect of political competition.

“I don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket,” he said. “I’m happy with what we’ve accomplished and I expect more people to join us—that’s the game.”

His spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, released a statement confirming the President’s remarks during the summit, which gathered APC leaders, the National Working Committee, the National Assembly leadership, and governors from the Progressive Governors’ Forum. The attendees unanimously endorsed Tinubu for a second term.

The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to long-term economic reforms, noting that both domestic and international observers have welcomed the changes. A one-party system isn’t ideal for democracy, but we’re the ruling party carrying forward Nigerians’ aspirations,” Tinubu stated.

He reminded citizens of their constitutional right to freely choose their political associations, and thanked stakeholders for their support over the past 24 months. He also praised the Federal Executive Council for courageously advancing his administration’s vision and applauded the National Assembly and party leaders for their backing.

“We vowed to confront Nigeria’s challenges by rebuilding trust, fostering prosperity, and reviving the economy,” he said. “Today, I’m proud to affirm that our reforms are working. Nothing worthwhile comes easily

Tinubu acknowledged the difficult reforms, including eliminating the arbitrage-driven multiple exchange rates and implementing comprehensive tax changes, but stressed that these measures were essential for long-term stability and growth. These policies are already attracting foreign direct investment, which will generate jobs and improve the quality of life for Nigerians,” Tinubu added.

During the summit, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, hailed the President’s leadership and moved a motion endorsing Tinubu for a second term in 2027. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani seconded the motion.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas also applauded Tinubu’s inclusive and strategic leadership and pledged to support his re-election bid.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who led members of the National Working Committee in endorsing Tinubu, declared him the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Ganduje urged party members to resist internal sabotage, engage with communities, and remain committed to the party’s founding ideals. “Let’s rally behind President Tinubu, support our policies, and deliver the Renewed Hope Nigerians deserve,” he said.
