President Bola Tinubu has called on the National Economic Council (NEC) to provide its support in transforming Nigeria’s economic fortunes. He made this appeal during the inauguration of the council, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The inauguration follows President Tinubu’s directive to NEC to convene and devise interventions to mitigate the impacts of petroleum subsidy removal. Emphasizing the significance of the task at hand, the President highlighted that there should be no excuses for failure in driving the nation’s economic growth.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its promises to the Nigerian people. Following the inauguration, the council proceeded into a closed-door session.
The NEC, comprising the 36 State Governors and other appointed government officials, convenes monthly to provide advice to the President on economic affairs in the Federation. Its primary objective is to coordinate economic planning efforts and programs across the various tiers of government.
In attendance at the inauguration were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Mele Kyari, Accountant General of the Federation Oluwatoyin Madein, Acting Governor of the Central Bank Folashodun Shonubi, and Permanent Secretaries from the Budget, National Planning, Federal Capital Territory Administration, and State House departments.
