Tinubu Mocks PDP, Labour Party: “It’s a Pleasure to See You in Disarray”

Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a pointed jab at Nigeria’s opposition parties on Thursday, declaring it a “pleasure” to watch the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) in a state of disarray. The remark came during a joint sitting of the National Assembly to mark Democracy Day.

Speaking before lawmakers, Tinubu welcomed defectors from the opposition into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), urging inclusiveness within the progressive fold while taking direct aim at the internal fractures within rival political camps.

“You are all welcome to the progressive fold. Nobody should close the door,” the president said, pausing for applause. “It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such a disarray.”

The president’s remarks follow a wave of defections from the PDP and LP to the APC, intensifying speculation over growing dissatisfaction within the opposition. Tinubu, seizing the moment, suggested that rather than fearing defections, political parties should turn inward and confront their structural weaknesses.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs, rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist,” he asserted.

In a more caustic tone, he added, “For me, I will not say, try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you to do so, either.”

Tinubu’s comments elicited mixed reactions on the floor. APC lawmakers responded with laughter and applause, while opposition members appeared visibly unsettled. Though the president has, in the past, advocated for a robust opposition as a cornerstone of democratic governance, Thursday’s remarks suggested a more combative stance amid the shifting political landscape.

Recent weeks have seen high-profile figures within the PDP and LP voice their grievances over internal party management and leadership direction, with some exploring options to align with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the political temperature rises, Tinubu’s remarks will likely sharpen tensions across party lines — and reinforce the ruling party’s narrative of consolidation ahead of a critical electoral cycle.
