UNICEF -SAYS OVER 70 PERCENT CHILDREN HAVE NOT BEEN POLIO VACCINATED IN BORNO STATE
World Polio Day is observed annually on October 24th to raise awareness on the significance of eradicating polio globally, In Borno state, the UNICEF in collaboration with Nigerian and international superstars has Launched a song titled “No More Zero Dose” aimed at raising concern on the importance of being polio-free.
The event which took place at Mamman Shuwa Memorial Hospital Maiduguri also highlighted the significance of eradicating polio worldwide and the crucial role communities play in achieving this goal.
This collaborative initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and concerted efforts in eliminating diseases that pose a threat to public health.
In her remarks, the UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office Dr. Gerida Birukila said ” As we Commemorates the World Polio Day today, it is an opportunity to reiterate the importance of routine immunization to the wellbeing of Children”.
“UNICEF has collaborated with Nigerian and international Superstars to produce a song underscoring the necessity of immunization for New borns and under five Children against childhood diseases including Polio, Measles, tetanus and other life threatening infections”.
“The song titled No more Zero Dose features Ali Nuhu, Kate Henshaw, Timi Dakolo, Wake cobhams, Sypro, Omawumi, Qing Madi, Master Soumy and others Highlights the need to protect our children and preserve their future”.
” According to the Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2023), the number of fully vaccinated Children is 40.3 percent in Northeast Nigeria while 26 percent of Children are without vaccination in the region. While Borno state recorded 28.5 percent of fully vaccinated children with basic antigens, 71.5 percent have reported to have no vaccination”. She said.
It is crucial for communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers to work together to ensure that every child receives the polio vaccine.
