Hon. Awaji Inombek Abiante, the Chairman of the House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, has earnestly appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish the National Urban and Regional Development Commission.

During a meeting with key stakeholders in Abuja on Tuesday, focusing on the implementation of integrated and sustainable urban development and physical planning across the states of the federation, Hon. Abiante emphasized the critical need for a dedicated national commission.

The chairman highlighted the pressing concerns of the urban poor and other vulnerable groups in the country, stressing the necessity for increased care and attention. He specifically pointed out the imperative of providing affordable and adequate housing, along with other essential amenities, to enhance the overall quality of life.

Hon. Abiante acknowledged the collaborative effort required for the committee to achieve its objective of rapidly transforming society. He emphasized the crucial role of other tiers of government in supporting and actively participating in these initiatives. Additionally, he commended the commendable efforts of State Governments in advancing the urban agenda through the development of new towns and the implementation of urban renewal and slum upgrading schemes.

In response to these concerns, Dr. Akinola Olakunde, the Director and head of the department at the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, urged the government to increase its investment in the sector. This appeal underlines the significance of prioritizing and bolstering initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of urban areas.
