Senator Kashim Shettima, the Vice President of Nigeria, has called upon Nigerians and stakeholders to recognize the Great Green Wall Initiative as an urgent rescue operation.
His remarks were delivered during the inaugural Great Green Wall Day Celebration at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he gave the keynote address.
VP Shettima emphasized that failing to complete this initiative would pose a severe threat to the collective existence of the people. He recalled President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fulfilling the Great Green Wall in his campaign manifesto and stated that the commemoration of this day demonstrates the administration’s dedication to this initiative as an act of self-preservation.
Referring to the Great Green Wall as “the largest living structure on the planet,” in accordance with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Yusuf Bukar, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, described how this initiative spans 8,000km across Africa.
He further highlighted that the Great Green Wall will bring forth a new era of sustainability and economic growth.
A significant moment during the event was the tree planting demonstration led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Vice President Shettima.
