‘We need help, not emergency rule’, Benue gov tells FG

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, Declares Need for Federal Support Over State of Emergency

Makurdi, Benue State – In a firm rebuttal to growing calls for a state of emergency in Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has emphasized that what the residents truly require is comprehensive support from the Federal Government, rather than heightened intervention measures.

The governor made these remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s “The Morning Show” on Wednesday.

Speaking to host Rufai Oseni and other panelists, Alia highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the state, including security threats and socio-economic hardships, which have been exacerbated by conflicts such as farmer-herder clashes and banditry.

“We don’t need a state of emergency; that would only add to our burdens,” Alia stated. “What the people of Benue need is full support from the Federal Government – resources, infrastructure development, and enhanced security assistance to address the root causes of our problems.”

Alia’s comments come amid increasing public discourse on the state’s security situation, with some stakeholders advocating for a state of emergency as a quick-fix solution.

However, the governor argued that such a declaration could disrupt governance and alienate residents, instead calling for collaborative efforts.

He specifically urged the Federal Government to prioritize funding for agriculture, road networks, and community policing initiatives to foster long-term stability.

Benue State, known as Nigeria’s food basket, has faced recurrent violence in recent years, leading to loss of lives and displacement.

Alia, who assumed office in May 2023, has been vocal about the need for federal partnership to tackle these issues without resorting to extreme measures.

The governor’s interview has sparked reactions on social media, with supporters praising his stance as pragmatic, while critics question whether federal support alone can sufficiently address the state’s immediate security needs.

As the conversation continues, stakeholders await a response from the Federal Government on Alia’s appeal.
