Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have reportedly held peace talks to resolve their two-year-long political feud. According to sources, the duo met recently at Wike’s Abuja residence, in a meeting brokered by former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba and current Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Insiders say Fubara offered an apology during the meeting and, in a symbolic show of respect, prostrated before the FCT Minister, Wike, seeking reconciliation.
The crisis destabilized Rivers politics and escalated in March when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency. The National Assembly approved the declaration, but critics widely condemned it as unconstitutional and excessive. Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s sole administrator after the emergency declaration.
In response, eleven PDP governors filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the state of emergency. PDP Deputy Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, urged Governor Fubara to prioritize Rivers State over personal political survival. He warned Fubara not to compromise the state’s autonomy for the sake of peace with Wike.
Meanwhile, the APC praised its leaders for mediating the conflict. APC spokesperson Bala Ibrahim said the party’s involvement was about restoring stability, not scoring political points.
Further meetings between the FCT Minister and Fubara are expected soon as reconciliation efforts continue.
