In response to the escalating security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, has taken a bold step by placing a N20 million bounty on criminals within Abuja. The former Governor of Rivers State made the announcement during an event where suspects involved in kidnappings, one-chance incidents, and other criminal activities were presented by the FCT police command in Abuja.
Minister Wike underscored the importance of not tolerating criminal activities within the FCT, and to incentivize efforts to combat crime, he declared a substantial reward for information leading to the capture of any criminal in the territory. The move aims to encourage residents and law enforcement agencies to collaborate in maintaining the security and safety of the nation’s capital.
During the presentation of the suspects, Minister Wike assured that the police and other security agencies operating in Abuja would receive additional communication devices and equipment. These enhancements are expected to bolster intelligence gathering and operational efficiency in the ongoing fight against criminal elements.
Responding to the raised security concerns, Dalhatu Ezekiel, the Commissioner for Public Complaints in the FCT, urged the Federal Government to prioritize the security situation in the area. He emphasized the need for immediate action, suggesting that a state of emergency could be declared if deemed necessary. Commissioner Ezekiel also appealed to Minister Wike to consider suspending ongoing projects temporarily to address the critical security issue directly impacting the lives of FCT residents.
The heightened insecurity in the nation’s capital has prompted calls from various quarters for urgent and decisive measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike. As stakeholders express their concerns, the FCT authorities are taking proactive steps to address the situation and enhance security measures to curb criminal activities in Abuja.
